The entrance hole for a birdhouse is usually a circle so we are going to use the formula for the area of a circle. Why you would need the area to cut out a hole? Who knows. But they asked for it so we need it.

The area of a circle is calculated by taking the value of pi and multiplying it by the radius squared. The radius is 1/2 of the diameter.

So for Michael's birdhouse the diameter of the hole is 1.5 inches. That means its radius is 0.75 inches. Plug this into the formula:

area = π(0.75)²

Now solve (preferably using a calculator unless you just know pi off the top of the dome like that.

area = 1.767 square inches, call it 1.77 square inches.
