A man jogs at a velocity of 2.5 m/s west for 1,200 s. He then walks at a velocity of 1.0 m/s east for 500 s and then stops to rest. What is the displacement of the man when he stops to rest?

The displacement is 2500 m towards west.

Explanation:

Taking west as negative direction and east as positive direction.

Velocity of man jogging west = -2.5 m/s

Time he traveled towards west = 1,200 s

Displacement in west direction =
Velcoty * time=-2.5\ m/s* 1200\ s=-3000\ m

Velocity of man jogging east = 1.0 m/s

Time he traveled towards east = 500 s

Displacement in west direction =
Velcoty * time=1.0\ m/s* 500\ s=500\ m

Total displacement can be calculated by finding the sum of displacement.

Total displacement =
-3000\ m+500\ m=-2500\ m

Since, the resultant displacement is negative, so the displacement is 2500 m towards west.
