They would most likely assume you're rich from your job, or guess that you're wealthy enough to afford an education! Befriending a gang member could be just as dangerous as being a victim. They could possibly threaten to kill you if you don't buy them drugs or something related. There could be multiple gangs around the area. Avoiding handing out personal information could prevent gangs outside of your city, state, and/or country, rather than those in the same place. It's still not a good idea to give out personal information, though!
