Answer:

x = 10

Explanation:

We'll use this rule: log a - log b = log (a/b).

Thus,

log(5 + x) – log(x – 5) = log 3 becomes log [ (5 + x) / (x - 5) ] = log 3.

We can strike out all three "log" operators, obtaining:

5 + x

-------- = 3

x - 5

Multiplying both sides by x - 5 yields x + 5 = 3(x - 5), or

x + 5 = 3x - 15, which simplifies to

20 = 2x. Thus, x = 10
