in step 2. the x-variable should be eliminated when
the equations are added together
Review the steps for solving the system
-3x - 5y = 1
- -/- 2 - 3 - 4 = 3
Multiply the second equation by 7 to get x + 5y = 21
Add the equations together to get –2x+= 22.
Solve for x to find x=-11.
Substitute x into an equation to find y
In step 3. both sides of the equation should be
multiplied by -2 rather than divided by-2.
In step 4. substituting x= -11 into the first equation
does not yield a value of 2 for y.
