Hey :)
So, since Chase ate one third of a pizza, the fraction he ate is 1/3. Tray ate 1/4.
Since the fractions dont have the same denominators, we have to change it so they do.
First, we have to find a number that both 4 and 3 can fit into.
To make it easier, we should find the lowest possible number both of the denominators can fit into.
Let's try 9. this works with 3, but not 4.
What about 12? 3 fits into 12 when multiplied by 4, and 4 fits into 12 when multiplied by 3!
So, we must transform the fractions so they have a denominator of 12.
We must multiply the Whole fraction to change the denominator. Let's start with 1/3.
3=12 when 3×4 so we must multiply the whole fraction by 4
1/3, 1×4=4, 3×4=12 so 1/3=4/12.
Now, lets do 1/4.
4×3=12 so we must multiply the fraction by 3.
1/4, 1×3=3, 4×3=12 therefore 1/4=3/12.
Now instead of 1/3 and 1/4 we have 4/12 and 3/12.
Now that the fractions have the same denominator, they can be added together to find the total amount of pizza eaten.
4/12+3/12=7/12.
7/12 of the pizza was eaten in total!
I hope this helps, if you have any questions please reply.
I hope you have a nice week! :)
