Monique has 2 artificial Christmas trees in her apartment. The taller tree is 1 foot shorter than 5 times the height of the smaller tree. If she stacked the shorter tree on top of the taller tree, they would be a sum of 60 inches tall ( feet). Find the height in feet of the taller tree (x) and the shorter tree (y)

Answer:

The height taller tree is 4 foot

The height small tree is 1 foot

Explanation:

Given:

2 artificial Christmas trees

The taller tree is 1 foot shorter than 5 times the height of the smaller tree

To Find:

Find the height in feet of the taller tree (x) and the shorter tree (y)

Solution:

The sum of height of two artificial Christmas trees = 60 inches

Converting inches into feet,

we know that

1 inch = 0.083foot

then

60 inches = 0.083 X 60

60 inches = 5 foot

Now

Taller tree is 1 foot shorter than 5 times the height of the smaller tree

y = 5x-1---------------------------------(1)

Sum of two artificial Christmas trees = 5 foot

x+ y = 5

x+ (5x-1) = 5

x+ 5x-1 = 5

6x -1 = 5

6x = 5 + 1

6x =6

x =
(6)/(6)

x=1

Substituting in (1)

y = 5(1)-1

y = 5-1

y =4
