In 5 minutes a conveyor belt moves 300 pounds of receyclable aluminum from the delievery truck a smaller belt moves the same quantitly of cans the same distance in 9 minutes if both belts are used find how long it takes to move the cans

Explanation:

It is given that, the conveyor belt transports 300 cans in 5 mins and the smaller belt transports 300 cans in 9 minutes.

Thus , the speed of conveyor belt is,

=
(300)/(5) = 60 cans per minute

and of smaller belt is,

=
(300)/(9) = (100)/(3) cans per minute

Thus, when both are used together,

conveyor belt will transport (60)(t) cans and smaller belt will transport
( (100)/(3))(t) cans per minute.

Thus the equation becomes,


300 = (60)(t) + ((100)/(3))(t) = ((280)/(3))(t)

t =
((300)(3))/(280) = (45)/(14) = 3.214 minutes
