working conditions in urban areas were poor in safety both due to lack of technological advancements in protection and the lack of competition for workers as state supported and formed as well as some non state supported monopolies took hold as the main providers in manufacturing industries. for the same reasons but especially due to lack of advancement in health protection the workplace became prone to illness due to close quarters and that basic modern forms of disease protection such as hand sanitizer did not yet exist
