Clay bought two water pumps to use to drain a 1200 gallon goldfish pond in his backyard. One pump will pump water at the rate of 100 gallons per hour. The other will pump water at the rate of 60 gallons per hour. How much time should be allowed to drain the goldfish pond using both pumps? (Round your answer to the nearest tenth.)

Answer:

7.5 hours

Explanation:

both pumps works simultaneously to pump 160 gallons of water per hour.

With a total pond capacity of 1200 gallons, you get your answer by simply dividing the total capacity by the flow rate which gives us 7.5 hours.

note: if it is stated that the pumps where connected together on the same line (either in series or parallel) this will be a different calculation.
