A walrus transfers energy by conduction through its blubber at the rate of 150 W when immersed in −1.00°C water. The walrus’s internal core temperature is 37.0°C , and it has a surface area of 2.00m2 . What is the average thickness of its blubber, which has the conductivity of fatty tissues without blood?

Answer:

average thickness of its blubber is 10.13 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

given data

rate of heat transfer = 150 W

immersed water temperature = −1.00°C

internal core temperature = 37.0°C

surface area = 2.00 m²

to find out

What is the average thickness of its blubber

solution

we will apply here rate of heat transfer H equation that is express as

H =
(dQ)/(dt) =
(KA(t2-t1)/(L) .................1

here K is coefficient of thermal conductivity and AS is area and t2 - t1 is change in temperature and L is average thickness

so put all value in equation 1 we get L

150 =
(0.2*2(37+1)/(L)

solve it we get

L = 0.10133

so average thickness of its blubber is 10.13 cm
