Adding (1) and (2) term by term will eliminate the term in x

9y = 9 ( divide both sides by 9 )

y = 1

Substitute y = 1 into either (1) or (2) for corresponding value of x

Substituting in (1)

4x + 5(1) = 1, that is

4x + 5 = 1 ( subtract 5 from both sides )

4x = - 4 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x = - 1
