Something that happens continuously in the past, something that happens continuously in the present, something that happens continuously in the future, etc.

The six types that exist are: present, past, future, perfect present, perfect past and perfect future.

The way this tense is formed is by using the auxiliary to be + present participle (-ing).

Let's see an example of each of the tenses:

  • Present: He is writing the essay.
  • Past : He was writing the essay.
  • Future: He will be writing the essay.
  • Present Perfect: He has been writing the essay.
  • Past Perfect: He had been writing the essay.
  • Future Perfect: He will have been writing the essay.
