A gas sample is confined within a chamber that has a movable piston. A small load is placed on the piston; and the system is allowed to reach equilibrium. If the total weight of the piston and load is 70.0 N and the piston has an area of 5.0 × 10–4 m2, what is the pressure exerted on the piston by the gas? Note: Atmospheric pressure is 1.013 × 105 Pa.

Answer: 3.87 × 10^4 Pa

Step-by-step explanation:

Pressure is the Force per unit area

P= F/A

Since weight of the piston and load is 70N

Force applied by the gas is 70N

P = 70N/(5 × 10^-4)m2

P = 14 × 10^4 Pa

But the piston has to do work against the atmospheric pressure

Atmospheric pressure=1.013×10^5Pa= 10.13×10^4

Residual pressure= (14 - 10.13) × 10^4

=3.87 × 10^4Pa
