Jimmy and Dan each improved their yards by planting daylilies and ivy. They bought their supplies from the same store. Jimmy spent $161 on 14 daylilies and 7 pots of ivy. Dan spent $88 on 2 daylilies and 14 pots of ivy. Find the cost of one daylily and the cost of one pot of ivy.

Answer:

Cost of one daylily = $9

Cost of one pot of ivy = $7

Explanation:

Let,

x be the cost of each daylily

y be the cost of each ivy

According to given statement;

14x+7y=161 Eqn 1

2x+14y=88 Eqn 2

Multiplying Eqn 1 by 2

2(14x+7y=161)

28x+14y=322 Eqn 3

Subtracting Eqn 2 from Eqn 3

(28x+14y)-(2x+14y)=322-88

28x+14y-2x-14y=234

26x=234

Dividing both sides by 26

(26x)/(26)=(234)/(26)\\x=9

Putting x=9 in Eqn 1

14(9) + 7y = 161

126 + 7y = 161

7y = 161 - 126

7y = 35

Dividing both sides by 7

(7y)/(7)=(35)/(7)\\y=5

Hence,

Cost of one daylily = $9

Cost of one pot of ivy = $7
