Answer:

Equivalent fractions are fractions that have the same value or amount even if they seem different. They are a type of fraction that are equivalent in nature.

Explanation:

Equivalent means being equal in value, function, amount or meaning. Even if they seem different they are the same in their own way (and I'm talking about fractions now)

Equivalent fractions are fractions that represent the same amount or value, but they do it with different top and bottom numbers.

In the image provided, you can see that the figures are the same size and the shaded parts of the two figures are also the same size. Therefore we can write equivalent fractions representing the shaded part of each figure.

Since the first figure has 1 out of 3 rectangles shaded, it represents 1/3. Since the second figure has 2 out of 6 rectangles shaded, it represents 2/6. So we can see that 1/3 must be equivalent to 2/6. Notice that if we multiply the numerator and the denominator of the first fraction by 2, we get the numerator and denominator of the second fraction.

So remember this rule for equivalent fractions. If we multiply or divide the numerator and denominator of a fraction by the same number, we will get an equivalent fraction.
