You are driving to a vacation spot with your family that is 1500 miles away. Including rest stops, you take 42 hours to get the the vacation spot. You drove on an average speed of 42 miles per hour. How many hours were you NOT driving? Please include an algebraic equation.

The time you were driving = distance / average speed

= 1500/42

= 35.714 hours.

Required equation is

t = 42 - d/s where t = time not driving, d = distance and s = average speed

Time not driving :

t = 42 - 35.714

= 6.286 hours

That is about 6 hours 17 minutes.
