Caroline incorrectly answered the following problem:

Which ordered pair would NOT appear as a solution for the linear equation y = -4x - 2?
A) (1, -6)
B) (-1, 5)
C) (-4, 14)
D) (2, -10)

Caroline chose A as her answer. Why is she incorrect?
A) (1, -6) is a solution because it creates a true statement when substituted into the equation
B) (1, -6) is a solution because y = -6
C) (1, -6) is a solution because it creates a false statement when substituted into the equation
D) (1, -6) is a solution because it is near the y-intercept of -2.

Answer:

1. (B)

2. (A)

Explanation:

A linear equation in two variable is an equation of straight line in cartesian coordinate system.

So the points lying on the line(of given equation) must satisfy the equation of line.

1. By putting coordinates of the points in given equation we can check weather the point lie on the line or not.

By checking we get that only the option B.(-1,5) is not satisfying the equation

hence it is not a solution.

2. By putting A.(1,-6) we see that it is satisfying the equation.

Hence it is not the solution of the question.
