Answer: x = 15, y = 27

Explanation:

let number 1 be x
let other number y

therefore, x+y = 42

y = 2x-3 ----> 2x-y = 3

Solving equations using elimination,

x+y=42

2x-y=3

therefore, 3x = 45

x = 15

substituting x in x+y = 42

therefore, x+y=42

15+y=42

y=42-15

y = 27
