Explanation:

To obtain the length of the segment :

a² + b² = c²

a = 8 ; b = 6

8² + 6² = c²

64 + 36 = c²

100 = c²

Square root of both sides :

Sqrt(100) = sqrt(c²)

10 = c

Mistake in the solution is that 6² = 36 and not 12
