A 24​-foot ladder is placed against a vertical wall of a​ building, with the bottom of the ladder standing on level ground 18 feet from the base of the building. How high up the wall does the ladder​ reach?

Explanation:

All se need to do is to find the height, from the diagram , pythagoras theorem will be applied to fing the height.

Pythagoras theorem states that :


hypotenus^(2) =
opposite^(2) +
Adjacent^(2)

From the diagram , Hypotenus = 24 , the other sides are 18 and the unknown height.

Let the unknown height be h , then by pythagoras theorem


24^(2) =
h^(2) +
18^(2)

576 =
h^(2) + 324

colloecting the like terms , we have


h^(2) = 576 - 324


h^(2) = 252

h =
√(252)

h = 15.87

h≈ 16 feet
