Solve. For questions 1 and 2, use the following information about toll cost for trucks.
Truck (2 or 3 axles): $3.00
Truck (4 or 5 axles): $6.25
Truck (6 or more axles): $10.00

2. One day, Shilo’s Shipping Company sent 4 trucks, each with 6 axles, and 5 trucks, each with 2 axles, across the bridge in one direction. The same day, Morton’s Movers sent 14 trucks, each with 2 axles, and 1 truck with 7 axles, across the bridge in one direction.
(a) Write an expression that shows how much more money Shilo’s Shipping Company spent in tolls than Morton’s Movers did.
(b) Evaluate the expression you wrote in Part (a). Show your work. How much more money did Shilo’s Shipping Company pay for tolls than Morton’s Movers paid?

Answer: Shilo spent $3 more than Morton's Movers. See part A below.

Step-by-step explanation:

SHILO: (4x10)+(5x3)=$55

MORTON: (14x3)+(1x10)=$52

With the information above, we can infer that Shilo spent more in tolls than Morton's Movers. Shilo had 4 trucks with 6 axels, which is equivalent to 4x10 because a truck with 6 or more axels is equal to $10. That, and Shilo also sent out 5 other trucks with 2 axels each. With the toll info, we can write the equation (4x10)+(5x3)=$55 since a truck with 2 axels is equal to $3. The same goes for Morton's Movers, 14 trucks with 2 axels=14x3 which is $42, and then we add on the $10 from the one truck with 7 axels, giving us the answer of $52. Therefore, Shilo spent more money in tolls that Morton's Movers.
