In December 1924, Edwin Hubble wrote a paper proving that

other galaxies outside the Milky Way existed. One distant
galaxy, called Andromeda, had a similar shape to the Milky
Way. In 1929, Hubble found a way to measure distances
between galaxies. It was called the red shift effect. It showed
that the galaxies were moving away from each other.
Astronomers based the Big Bang Theory on his findings.
They concluded the whole universe has been expanding since
the Big Bang.
