Capillaries, alveoli in the lungs, and glomeruli in the renal system are lined by simple squamous epithelial cells. Meanwhile, the skin, inside lining of the mouth, and the lining of the esophagus are made up of stratified squamous epithelial cells. How do the required functions of these tissues relate to the type of epithelial cells found there?.

Simple squamous epithelial cells allow for the
passage of materials through using diffusion
and filtration while also secreting substances
for lubrication so in the alveoli, glomeruli
and capillaries they filter and diffuse blood,
nutrients, and waste. Stratified squamous
epithelial cells are thicker protective cells
that surround to ensure protection against
harmful substances or external factors like
cuts on the skin and inside of the mouth.
