On Friday, a fruit stand sold a total of 92 apples and oranges. On Saturday, the fruit stand sold four times the number of apples and two times the number of oranges. A total of 284 apples and oranges were sold on Saturday. Which system of equations yields the number of apples, a, and oranges, o, sold on Friday?

Answer:

50 apples, 42 oranges

Explanation:

apples = a

oranges = o

Set up equations.

a + o = 92

4a + 2o = 284

Multiply first equation by 2 and subtract.

2a + 2o = 184

- (4a + 2o = 284)

-2a = -100

a = 50

Now substitute the a value into any equation.

a + o = 92

50 + o = 92

o = 42
