One hundred sixty feet of fencing encloses a rectangular garden on three sides. One side of the garden is the side of a barn and requires no fencing. The longer side is parallel to the barn. If the length of the longer side of the rectangle is twice the width, what are the dimensions of the garden?

Answer:

40 feet by 80 feet.

Explanation:

If the length is L and the width is W, we have:

L = 2W.

So as the length of the fencing is 160 feet:

L + 2W = 160

Substituting for L:

2W + 2W = 160

W = 40 feet.

L = 2W = 80 feet.
