The 1534 Act of Supremacy acknowledged the monarch of England as the head of the Church in England instead of the Pope .
King Henry VIII disagreed with the Roman Catholic Church on many points, including the Church's ban on divorce. Henry VIII was not happy with the fact that the Pope had power over all kingdoms just because he was the international leader of these kingdoms' religion. This is why, by declaring himself and his successors the Supreme Heads of the Church of England, Henry VIII started to distance England from traditional Roman Catholicism towards their own national religion, the Anglican Church. This important religious change is called the English Reformation.
