Answer:

A bacterial infection is the most common etiology of epiglottitis. They gain their entry in the body when we breathe in. The most usual strain of bacteria which cause this condition is known as Haemophilus influenzae type b,also known as Hib.

Step-by-step explanation:

ETIOLOGY:

  • A physical trauma from a direct blow can also cause epiglottitis( inflammation of epiglottis). A severely inflamed epiglottis can also block the airways which can lead to serious breathing difficulties.
  • Swallowing of any chemicals which can burn our throat.
  • Smoking of drugs like cocaine
  • It can also caused by inhaling the droplets of affected person.
  • Other bacteria & virus can also cause epiglottitis i.e.Streptococcus pneumoniae,Staphylococcus aureus & Streptococcus A,B &C

SYMPTOMS:

  • Fever
  • Anxiousness & Restlessness
  • Drooling
  • Severe sore throat
  • Difficulty in breathing & swallowing
  • A muffled or hoarse voice

PRECAUTIONS:

  • Avoid sharing personal items
  • Frequent washing of hands
  • Use a proper alcohol based sanitizer
  • A vaccination must be given to the child at the age of 2, 4 & 6 months. A booster can also be given between 12-15 months old.

TREATMENT FOR EPIGLOTTITIS:

  • Monitoring of Oxygen levels with pulse oximetry device & protecting of airways.
  • If blood oxygen levels are too low, get supplemental oxygen through a tube or mask
  • Intravenous fluids are given for the maintenance of nutrition & hydration if a person have swallowing difficulties
  • Antibiotics to treat bacterial infection
  • Anti - inflammatory medications to treat throat swelling
  • In severe cases tracheostomy or cricothyroidotomy
