Explanation:

The quadratic formula is -b sqrt b^2-4ac

To use this formula the question must be in the ax^2+bx+x=0 format

In this question, there is an invisible one in front of the x^2 so that is the "a"

The "b" is the second term which is -5

The "c" is the third term which is -4

You plug these terms into the equations to get

5±√-5^2-4(1)(-4)

To solve from here you have to solve what is inside the square root symbol first which makes the equation

5±√25+16

5±√41/2

Since the 41 inside of the square root symbol can not be simplified further, that is your answer.
