Read the following passage:

The year is 2186. Since the polar ice caps melted several
decades ago, humans have been struggling to survive on a
planet completely covered by ocean. They subsist only on
seafood and fight over scarce fuel resources to power their
watercrafts. Those who are able to produce fresh water
rule over those who cannot. I was the last of these
oppressed in my colony. Now that I have run out of metal
parts to trade for water, I too will be gone soon. I am too
weak to dive anymore and only hope that my message
lives on long after I am gone.
Which statement describes the aesthetic impact that the author of this
passage most likely intends?

A. To give readers a sense of despair that this society is so
dysfunctional

B. To convey that the narrator has given up on fighting for survival

C. To develop the idea of survival of the fittest in a dystopian society

D. To cause readers to feel confused by the balance of power in this
society

Answer: ( C ) To develop the idea of survival of the fittest I’m a dystopian society.

Explanation: aesthetic impact that the author of this passage presumably intends to develop is the idea of survival of the fittest in a dystopian society. A dystopian society may be a futuristic, imagined universe, within which oppressive societal control and also the illusion of an ideal society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control.

It should be noted that characteristics of dystopian society are found in the passage. People are struggling to survive, they fight over the limited resources available, they live in a dehumanized state, the natural world is distrusted, those who are not able to compete any longer are phased out of the society, they die out.
