When Clayton does 7 push-ups and 19 sit-ups, it takes a total of 33 seconds. In comparison, he needs 40 seconds to do 12 push-ups and 16 sit-ups. How long does it take Clayton to do each kind of exercise?

Let us assume the push up be p

And, the sit up be s

Now the equations are

7p + 19s = 33..... (1)

12p + 16s = 40.........(2)

Now multiply by 12 in equation 1 and by 7 in equation 2

84p + 228s = 396

84p + 112s = 280

Now solve both equations

116s = 116

s = 1 seconds

Now put s value in any of the equation

7p + 19(1) = 33

7p + 19 = 33

7p = 33 - 19

p = 2 seconds

Hence, the push up takes 2 seconds and sit up takes 1 seconds
