Cant figure out what i am suppose to do with this problem

Answer:

x=2, y=3

Explanation:

y+x=5, subtract x from both sides you get, y=-x+5

since y also equals x+1, you can tell x+1=-x+5,

add x to both sides you get, 2x+1=5

subtract 1 from both sides you get, 2x=4

divide both sides by 2 and you get, x=2.

Now sub in 2 for x in any of the equations to get y.

y=x+1. y=(2)+1, y=3.
