Why have some Caribbean islands remained politically linked to European or the United States instead of seeking their independence?

Answer: By the 1650s England had taken control of several islands in the Caribbean, including Jamaica and Barbados. 2.3 million Africans were enslaved and transported to British colonies in the Caribbean. From the 1960s onwards, former British colonies in the Caribbean began to gain independence. Hope this helps :)
