- The Continental Army was unexperienced and it had to face the best trained army in the world:

- the colonists army faced a problem of supplies in the beginning;

- its equipment was inferior to the British troops´ for a good part of the conflict.

Advantages:

- They were fighting for a just and noble cause, freedom for themselves and their country. The British just had to suppress another colonial rebellion;

- the Americans knew better the terrain and were better adapted to it and to the weather than the British were;

- after solving the supply problem, American supply lines were not as overextended as those of the English, who had to be sent food and ammunition from England.
