Amy has three pieces of string of length 16 cm, 56 cm and 24 cm respectively. For an art project, she wants to cut the three lengths of string into smaller pieces such that all the pieces are of equal length, with no string left over. Find the greatest length that each piece of string can be, in cm.

To get the the greatest length that each piece of string can be if she wants to cut the three lengths of string into smaller pieces such that all the pieces are of equal length, with no string left over, we will have to find the greatest common factor for the three lengths

16 = 2 * 8

56 = 7 * 8

24 = 3 * 8

Since 8 is common to all the factors, hence the greatest common factor is 8.

Hence the greatest length that each piece of string can be, in cm is 8cm
