A shopper purchases apples, bananas, and grapes. The weight of the bananas is 1lb. Less than the weight of the apples. The weight of the grapes is 1lb. Less than the weight of the bananas. The total weight of the apples, bananas, and grapes is 9.6 lbs. What is the weight of the apples, in pounds?

Let :

x = weight of apple

Weight of banana = x - 1

Weight of grape = x - 1 - 1 = x - 2

Total weight of apple, banana and grape = 9.6

The weight of apple is ;

x + (x - 1) + (x - 2) = total weight

x + x - 1 + x - 2 = 9.6

3x - 3 = 9.6

3x = 9.6 + 3

3x = 12.6

x = 12.6 / 3

x = 4.2

Hence, weight of apple is 4.2 lbs
