His name was Niccolò Machiavelli
Machiavelli believed that public and private morality had to be understood as two different things in order to rule well.

Machiavelli believes that a prince should secure his power and should carefully keep track of most of the cruel things/events that he took part in. He argues that every prince should try to be virtuous.
