A bird is flying with a speed of 18.6 m/s over water when it accidentally drops a 2.30 kg fish. The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s 2 . If the altitude of the bird is 5.50 m and air resistance is disregarded, what is the speed of the fish when it hits the water?

Answer:21.3 m/s

Step-by-step explanation:

Given

speed
u=18.6 m/s

mass of fish
m_f=2.30 kg

Altitude
h=5.50 m

Time taken to cover h

h=ut+(at^2)/(2)

5.5=(9.8* t^2)/(2)

t^2=1.122

t=1.05 s

Vertical velocity after
t=1.05 s

v_y=0+gt

v_y=9.8* 1.05=10.38 m/s

Horizontal velocity will remain same
u=18.6 m/s

Net velocity
v_(net)=√(u^2+v_y^2)

v_(net)=√(18.6^2+10.38^2)

v_(net)=√(453.76)=21.30 m/s
