How do you relate to the experiences that Nikki Grimes describes in the poem? Do you

think that the speaker’s suggestion to use poetry to deal with oppression is a helpful one?

Answer:

-How do I relate to the experiences?

-Does poetry help deal with repression?

-Why?

Step-by-step explanation:

  1. In more than one instance, I have felt the need to write down a certain issue that is bothering me or vent to an empty page. The power of writing down troubles that haunt us or problemas that refuse to be left in the past because of their persistent hassling is that we become the protagonists and can rewrite our own story.
  2. Yes, poetry can be an invaluable emergency exit for emotions, an escape valve for accumulated stress and trauma, and a very unique way of expressing anguish and oppression that simple anger can never accomplish. When we write poetry, we must focus because the lines do not always flow readily and should instead be carefully and honestly scripted.
  3. The understand of poetry does depend on only a visual or emotional reaction like anger does. Poetry goes much deeper and challenges the reader to decipher the message. This challenge forces the reader to consider the message from another point of view. In this way mutual comprehension, even if it is only partial, begins to close the gap between the oppressors and the oppressed.
