One third of a rectangular playground is designed for young children. In that part of the playground, a play structure covers 2/5 of the children’s space.

a. Represent the problem with multiplication.


b. What fraction of the total playground is the play structure? Show all of your work.

a) 1/2 of 1/5 of 15 = 2 m^2

b)2/15

Explanation:

Let the total area of playground be 15 m^2

[because 15 is multiple of 3 and 5 both].

therefore,area playground is designed for young children = 1/3 of 15 = 5 m^2

area of the play structure= 2/5 of 5= 2m^2

or = 1/2 of 1/5 of 15 = 2 m^2

b) fraction of the total playground is the play structure = area of play structrure/ area of total ground.

= 2/15
