Vilgot made a hat, then a scarf. He graphed the relationship between the total weight (in grams) of the yarn he had used and the length (in centimeters) of the scarf.

What feature of the graph represents how much of the yarn Vilgot used for the hat?

a) slope
b) x-intercept
c) y-intercept
d) none of the above

Answer:

b) x-intercept

Explanation:

First Vilgot made a hat with some amount of yarn, let us assume the weight of yarn used to be 'h', which is fixed. Then we assume the weight of yarn used to make unit length of scarf be 'm'.

The sum of the weight of yarn used to make hat and scarf both is 'x' and the length of scarf is 'y', as given in the question.

The sum of weight of scarf and hat can also be expressed as:

( weight of yarn used to make hat ) + ( weight of yarn used to make unit length of yarn ) × ( length of scarf made )

The above equation in terms of variables (assumed and given) will appear like:

x=h+m* y

here m and h are constants.

The above equation is represented by the graph given in the question.

So, if in the equation we substitute y=0 then x=h which is x-intercept.

Therefore the x- intercept of graph give h which is the weight of yarn used to make hat.
