Part of the opening paragraph of The Crisis; "These are the times that try men's souls...Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet... the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph"

Hence, noting that this article was written on the day the General Washington crossed the Delaware River in retreat, and at a time when the Continental Army was been defeated by the British a number of times. Thomas Paine is however, comforting the reader with the understanding that even though the present times are tough and challenging, victory is possible.
