I'm not sure I would cross multiply as my first step.

How about subtracting 7/3 first.

0.5x = 21/4 - 7/3

0.5x = 21*3/(4*3) - 7*4/(3*4)

0.5x = 63 / 12 - 28/12

0.5x = 35/ 12 Now multiply by 2

2*0.5x = 35*2 / 12

x = 70/12

x = 5 10/12 or

x = 5 5/6 or

x = 5.8333333

There might be a slightly easier way of doing this.

Suppose you multiply by 2 to begin with

x + 14/3 = 42/4

x + 14/3 = 21/2

x = 21/2 - 14/3

x = 63/6 - 28/6

x = 35/6

x = 5 5/6

I don't think there is much difference in how you do it. The numbers are just plain ugly.
