a museum offers a 2-hour guided group tour. for groups with fewer than 25 people the cost is $9.25 per person; for groups with 25 people or more the cost is $8.50 per person. The 27 people in the 9:00 a.m. tour group each paid $ 9.25 in advance. What is the total refund that the museum owes the 9:00 a.m. group?

Answer:

$20.25

Explanation:

There's two ways to solve this.

First Method: Because they were a group of 27, they were meant to pay $8.50 each.

Multiplying the cost for each person by the number of people (8.50 x 27), we learn that the group would only have to pay $229.50.

However, they paid $9.25 each, and with 27 people, (9.25 x 27) would be $249.75 in total.

Now, we subtract how much the group paid in total by the amount they were meant to pay.

$249.75 - $229.50 = $20.25

Second Method:

Since each person was meant to pay $8.50 but paid $9.25, subtracting $9.25 - $8.50 makes us find out that each person paid $0.75 more than needed.

Since there's 27 people who each paid $0.75 more than needed, we can simply multiply $0.75 x 27 and also get $20.25.

And there's your final answer. Ps: sorry for answering 4 years late
