An English teacher is purchasing some markers and a poster board for students to write on. The markers cost $1.75 each. The poster board costs $6. The teacher has $24.20 to spend. Write and solve and inequality to find the greatest number of markers she can purchase.

1.75m + 6 ≤ 24.20

In this equation, the variable 'm' represents the number of markers. Since the english teacher is only buying one poster board, there is no need to assign it to a variable.

Because the teacher can't spend more than $24.20, the price of the markers and the board must be less than or equal to () 24.20

Now we solve for the equation.

Subtract both sides by 6 in order to isolate m.

1.75m ≤ 18.20

Divide both sides by 1.75:

m ≤ 10.4

Since you can't buy a fraction of a marker, we can round down.

m ≤ 10

The teacher can buy a maximum of 10 markers.
