Answer:

Given:

Cost at which Mr. Sanchez’s class sold fruit pies =$1.55.

Cost at which Mr. Kelly’s class sold bottles of fruit juice= $1.40.

Total items sold by both the class= 60

Total amount earned by both the class= $88.20

Solution:

(a)System of equations that model the problem:

Let the Mr. Sanchez's class sold fruit pies = x

The no. Of bottles of fruit juice sold by Mr. Kelly's class = 60-x

So, according to the question,

1.55x+(60-x)1.40=88.20

1.55x+(60)(1.40)-1.40x=88.20

1.55x-1.40x+84=88.20

0.15x+84=88.20

0.15x=4.20

x=(4.20)/(0.15)

x=28

(b)To find which class earned more money:

x=28

Thus Number of fruit pies sold by Mr. Sanchez's class = 28

The no. Of bottles of fruit juice sold by Mr. Kelly's class = 60-28 = 32

Total amount earned by Mr. Sanchez's class = 28×1.55 = $43.4

Total amount earned by Mr. Kelly's class = 32×1.4 = $44.8

So Mr. Kelly's class earned more money.

(c) How much more money did that class earn?

Mr. Kelly's class earned $44.8 by selling 32 bottles of fruit juice
