Explain why Latin is the basis for many scientific names

In earlier days, Latin was considered the language of the scholars. That was the reason Latin was chosen for binomial nomenclature. As scholars of all languages learned Latin, just hearing the name would give the hearer an idea of what the organism is even if (s)he had not seen it in person.

some scientists which include Mendeleev and Neuton did published their papers and findings in Latin. but when Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus started to devise a system of classifying organisms, he also gave different phyla and species Latin names, and this was because Latin was such a universal or acceptable form of scholar language in Europe.
