3.3 gallons

Explanation:

Let
q_(c) be the rain water collected bu Julia.

Let
q_(f) be the rain water she used for flowers.

Let
q_(g) be the rain water she used for garden.

Total rain water used by Julia is
q_(f)+q_(g)

Total rain water collected by Julia is
q_(c)

Question a:

Change in rain water=
q_(f)+q_(g)-q_(c)

Question b:

It is given that
q_(c)=8.4\\q_(f)=6.5\\q_(g)=5.2

Substituting in the expression gives,

increase in rain water=
6.5+5.2-8.4
=3.3
