We know Pythagoras Formula for Right Triangle;


Hypotenuse^(2) =Perpendicular^(2) +Base^(2)

Here hypotenuse and one leg values in above equation and take
Base=a;


13^(2) =12^(2) +a^(2)


a^(2) =13^(2) -12^(2)


a=\sqrt{13^(2)-12^(2)}

So 2nd equation can be used to determine the length of other leg.
