The population of New Jersey is

9,000,000 and is decreasing by 100,000
people each year. Georgia's population is
4,000,000 people and is increasing by
400,000 a year. How many years from
now will they have the same population?

Answer: y = 10 years

Explanation:

Hint: y=year

New Jersey = Georgia

NJ pop. - (NJ yearly amount)(y) = GA pop. + (GA yearly amount)(y)

9,000,000 - (100,000y) = 4,000,000 + 400,000y

9,000,000 - 4,000,000 = 400,000y + 100,000y

5,000,000 = 500,000y

5,000,000/500,000 = y

10 = y

y = 10 years
